8.18
Islamophobia is a hotly contested issue, which negatively affects Müslim populations, especially in Europe and par-ticularly since the vvatershed of 9/11. Not only 9/11 but also other terrorist events in Europe such as the London and Madrid bombings, the murder of Theo van Gogh, and the Charlie Hebdo shootings, have ali led to an increase in Islamophobic sentiments in European societies. As a re-sult, Muslims have increasingly been seen as'Others'and deemed security threats, with security approaches being given higher priority on the agendas of policy makers and others concemed with integration and assimilation. This book examines hovvTurkish immigrants in Germany and the Netherlands have responded to the securitiza-tion of integration and Islamophobia. İn this context many questions arise. How have Turkish immigrants in Europe perceived this process? Hovv have they been affected? To what extent have they suffered discrimination? Hovv do they view integration policies, changes in legislation and intergroup relations? Hovv have their characteristics, iden-tities, and acculturation strategies changed? Hovv has their political, social and cultural mobilization taken place? This book not only provides the ansvvers to these ques-tions, amongst others, but also adds comparative aspects in a range of contexts: countries (Germany - the Netherlands); ethnicities (Turks - other Muslims); religions (Muslims - Christians - Jevvs); and home - hoşt countries (Turks in Germany and the Netherlands - Turks in Turkey).
